Château Lascombes

The Deuxieme Grand Cru Classé vineyard Château Lascombes rises majestically in the commune of Margaux in Bordeaux. Compared to the typical vineyard châteaux of the region, the château has quite a unique character, as it is a composition of many different parts that were cultivated by the owners in different periods of time. The history of the estate probably dates back to the 12th century, when the Durfort de Duras family grew grapes here. Through unknown channels, it passed in the 17th century to the Chevalier de Lascombes, namesake and also builder of the first château. The castle eventually passed through the hands of many different owners. Today it belongs to the insurance company MACSF.

Terroir in Margaux

The vineyard of Château Lascombes consists of the most sought-after plots in Margaux, made up of a mixture of soil types unique to this appellation. The vineyard is divided into three distinct blocks of roughly equal area: a gravelly outcrop planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, a block of clay-gravel composed of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally clay-limestone plots where Merlot finds its optimal expression. Interestingly, Merlot is the predominant variety in the vineyard's varietal composition, accounting for 50% of the total, a unique feature in the Margaux appellation.

The cellar

Château Lascombes wines are aged in barrels for eighteen to twenty months. By using Oxoline barrel racks, the winery has adopted a very reliable technology based on simple principles. While the exterior of the winery closely follows the architecture of the region, the interior offers a more modern style, especially in the first-year cellar, where the lighting catches visitors' attention with its fluorescent blue glow. In each of the cellars, traditional materials combine to offer an image of classicism, strength and sobriety.
