    Colheita Port 2009 - Niepoort

    The Colheita Port from Niepoort is a long barrel matured, expressive port wine from Sousão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional and other Portuguese red grape varieties.

    In the glass this port shines in a brick-red colour with chestnut brown edges. The nose reveals intense notes of candied fruit - especially plum, apricot and fig - and fine smoky notes. On the palate, the aromas of dried fruits and spicy-nutty nuances are clearly perceptible. The lively acidity is perfectly integrated into the dense body and accompanies the long, present finish.

    Vinification of Niepoort Colheita

    A vintage Tawny matured in the barrel is called Colheita, which means "harvest". Colheitas must mature at least seven years in the barrel, but at Niepoort it is a tradition to let this port mature a few more years before they are bottled. This gives the port a sandy tone and the slow barrel maturation in the old wooden barrels gives it a nutty, woody note.

    After the grapes have been carefully harvested by hand in the Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão vineyards, the grapes are then stomped on foot according to the traditional method in Lagares. In the winery in Vila Nova de Gaia, the port is then matured in pipas (550 litres). The ripening takes place for more than 10 years.

    Enjoy this port wine with liver pâté, desserts such as crème brûlée and cakes with chocolate or fresh fruit. But also solo this port is a real pleasure.
