The Yacoubian Hobbs winery was founded on friendship and a shared passion for good wine.

Hobbs and Yacoubian

Paul Hobbs and the Yacoubian family- the genesis of the Yacoubian Hobbs success story

The Yacoubian family had always been dedicated to the passion of wine growing in Armenia. It was rather by chance that they came into contact with Paul Hobbs, a well-known and outstanding oenologist. Paul knew little about the history of viticulture in the region at the time, and so in 2005 he toured Armenia and six of the ten provinces already under cultivation with the Yacoubians family. Paul Hobbs was simply overwhelmed by the insane potential of the Armenian wine-growing region. The partnership was officially sealed in 2008 and since then Paul Hob bs travels with the Yacoubians to the Vayots Dzor several times a year to oversee the cultivation and production for the Yacoubian-Hobbs wines. Together with the local team, they bring new methods to the vineyards and also to the winery to not only produce wines of the highest quality, but also to enhance and preserve the region as a whole. In doing so, honoring the history and potential of Armenian wine is an important cornerstone of the successful collaboration. The new vineyards planted in 2014 are just a stone's throw from the Areni-1 cave, the oldest known winery dating back to probably over 6,000 years ago. This would make Armenia the cradle of viticulture according to today's standards.

PAUL HOBBS - a visionary for the Yacoubian Hobbs winery

Paul Hobbs is considered a visionary because of his performance in the vineyards and cellars, and on an international level. Influenced by his childhood on the farm, he has found innovative, scientific approaches to refine the art of winemaking. He is known for breaking with tradition and forging new paths in search of the best quality. He focuses on new concepts- both in the cultivation of the land and in the production of the wines, which only reflect their originality. In Armenia, he has found exactly that, as the country has been largely spared from modern agriculture and large industrial practices.

Vines in landscape

Vayots Dzor- home of Yacoubian Hobbs

With vineyards over 1200 meters above sea level, this is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Armenia. The location of the vineyards is truly majestic and contains only about 10% of the country's vineyards. An ancient grape variety native to Armenia, Areni has adapted perfectly to the high altitude mountainous region of Vayots Dzor where the vines thrive on the rocky, mineral rich and volcanic soils. White grape varieties in this region are

  • Voskehat
  • Khatuni
  • Qrdi and
  • Garan Demak.

Volcanic basalt, tufa and limestone are the dominant components of the soils in the region.
