Great potential recognized early

In the 1980s, José Manuel Vizcarra Aguado was one of the pioneers in planting vineyards when no one was betting on the Ribera del Duero region. Ten years later, his son Juan Carlos Vizcarra followed in his father's footsteps, first making young fresh wines and later wines with plenty of potential to age.

Since 2007, Bodegas Vizcarra has been almost completely remodeled and new technology has been acquired. The new equipment has been designed so that all production processes are carried out by gravity, making the use of pumps unnecessary. Juan Carlos Vizcarra is currently concentrating on the microvinification (carbon maceration) of grapes from particularly old plots.

The vineyards are the star

Nestled in what is known as the "heart of the Ribera del Duero" are 55 hectares of predominantly red grape varieties. In addition, there is one hectare of Merlot and some other international grape varieties. The vines are "raised" in wire trellis, but the typical regional bush form can also be found at Bodegas Vizcarra.

The family vineyards are located in two municipalities. Mambrilla de Castrejón and Roa de Duero. The vineyards are distributed in the following locations:

• Carrascal
• Ambuena
• Oro

• Tras de San Pedro
• Senda del Oro
• Torralvo
• La Ribota

Harvesting is done at the optimal time of ripening and always by hand. The fruit from our vineyards is collected in boxes of 15 or 20 kilograms, which are transported with great care to the winery. There the grapes are carefully re-selected and pressed.
