Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce - a family in the Manchuela

Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce is a small family winery in the Manchuela region of Castilla-La Mancha. The estate is run by the Ponce family. Juan Antonio Ponce Sr. once inherited from his father a few vineyards in Iniesta that were planted with Bobal. His son, Juan Antonio Jr., also worked in the vineyard as a child, so that the desire grew in him to study viticulture, which he would later do in Requena. At the age of 18, he graduated and worked in the Iniesta cooperative, and at the age of 21, he joined the Telmo Rodriguez company. Here he learned some of the most important basics for his own viticulture, and he was later able to refine his knowledge by traveling to France. Packed with all this knowledge, he suggested to his father that he start a winery with his own vineyards.

10 years later, this winery has become an insider's tip.  The Ponces are masters in the processing of autochthonous grape varieties, for example:

• Bobal
• Moravia
• Albilla

The Ponces keep close to biodynamic agriculture, although they do not have any certification. The lunar calendar of this form of cultivation serves them as a basis for determining the individual times for the work in the vineyard. They also do not use artificial yeast, and the vineyard soils are planted with grasses and herbs typical of the area to create a natural protective layer. In this way, the vines are better protected against pests, and the nutrient supply is also improved.

Cellar work at Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce

The individual parcels are vinified separately in the cellar in order to preserve the character of the soils. Due to the traditional elaboration of the vintages, the wines are sometimes very different, but this is what makes these wines so appealing. Every bottle has a surprise in store, but you can be sure with Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce that it is always of high quality.  In 2017 they inaugurated their new winery building, into which a new processing plant was scaffolded. This way, new projects such as the processing of the Marisancho or the Pintilla grape can be realized.
