Fratelli Branca - tradition, quality and innovation since 1845

In 1845 Bernardino Branca, the founder of Fratelli Branca, invents Fernet Branca, a bitter that will make history.   From home production to the opening of a production plant in Corso di Porta Nuova, Milan is the place where one of the most entrepreneurial adventures is born. In 1862 Stefano Branca joins the company and opens up new markets. After Stefano's death in 1891, his widow Maria Scala very successfully takes over the management of the company, until the eldest son Bernardino comes of age.   The company expands its product portfolio and markets them abroad. In 1895 Leopoldo Metlicovitz develops the artwork that still serves as the company logo and is known worldwide: Branca World. 1907 Dino Branca takes over the management of Fratelli Branca and initiates the international expansion. The production facility in Milan is moved to where it is still located today: Via Resegone in Milan. In 1918 Fratelli Branca is transformed into a limited liability company and the capital is consolidated at 150 million liras.

In 1930 the production plant in St. Louis in Alsace is opened. In 1938 Dino is awarded the title of Conte di Pomanico by King Vittorio Emanuele III, in recognition of his services to the entrepreneurial and commercial world. In 1941, the Argentinean company Fratelli Branca Destilerias is founded. Two years before Dino's death, he handed over the management of the company to his son Pierluigi, under whom the European production was expanded.

In 1965 the Brancamenta is created, a revolutionary product by Pierluigi, which combines the digestive and beneficial properties with the pleasant taste of freshness. In 1981 the Centro Studi Maria Branca is founded for quality control and research.  Villa Branca Srl is born in 1985 with offices in Mercatale Val di Pesa.   The portfolio of Branca products is now enriched with Villa Branca Chianti Classico wines, Villa Branca Chianti Riserve and extra virgin olive oil.In 1987 follows the acquisition of Distilleria Candolini of Tarcento.

The new president, Giuseppe Branca, Pierluigi's uncle, starts in 1990 the extension of the space that will later become the Branca Museum, and in 1996 the construction of the museum begins.

With the death of Pierluigi Branca, his son Niccolò becomes CEO of Fratelli Branca in 1999, giving new impetus to the reorganization of the group. Brand International SPA also becomes active, the holding company with Niccolò Branca as president. The strategic and operational choices then made led the distillery to occupy new significant positions in key markets and to compete with large multinationals.

Caffè Borghetti entered the brand portfolio in 2001, the liqueur of the real espresso coffee, obtained according to the old recipe dating back to 1860.

The Fernet Branca distillery in St-Louis, built in the early 1900s, is converted into a museum and opened to the public on 15 June 2004 as the "Espace d'Art contamporain" Fernet-Branca.

In 2009 the Collezione Branca opens, a heritage of history and culture in the heart of Milan. A journey through raw materials, tools, herbs, spices and roots, stories and objects: Precious testimonies of a production process.

In October 2011, Niccolò Branca is named "Cavaliere del lavoro" by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano.

In 2015 Fratelli Branca celebrates 170 years of company existence. An achievement for the company and its soul: the product. To mark the occasion, a gift was presented to the city of Milan: a modern interpretation of the old chimney in the production facilities in Via Resegone: a street art work overlooking the city with a mixture of colors and images reminiscent of the spices and bottle of Fernet-Branca. To mark the occasion, Branca has published, together with Rizzoli, the monograph "Branca, on the wings of excellence", awarded by the "Osservatorio Monografie Italiane (OMI)" as the best publication of the year.

The 170th anniversary of Fratelli Branca was honoured by the Ministry of Economic Development with the issue of a limited edition stamp.

Today, Fratelli Branca products can be purchased in over 160 countries on 5 continents.  Fernet-Branca and Brancamenta, Brancy, Acquaivt, coffee liqueur, vermouth, wines and sparkling wines: Branca is increasingly driving the differentiation of its offer, expanding far beyond the categories of spirits and aperitifs.

Fratelli Branca and culture

The Branca family has always paid great attention to culture and the social context, its changes and its needs. Sensitive to new and avant-garde technologies, Branca communication has in fact also changed in events and life experiences, acting on changes in Italy and the world, for example by participating in the great exhibitions of the 1900s.

The family has promoted various cultural initiatives that have always been linked to the territory and the industry, for example the restructuring of the Tower or Parco Sempione in Milan, now known as Torre Branca, the Collezione Branca, which opened to the public in the current production facilities in Milan on June 4, 2009, the transformation of the production facility in St. Louis (France) into a permanent exhibition space for modern art and the Museo Carpano.

Today, because of this historical relationship between the company and culture in all its nuances, Fratelli Branca Distillerie continues to promote and develop cultural initiatives as a company or in collaboration with local, national and international associations.

In 2008, Fratelli Branca Distillery in Argentina organized the "Arte Unico" competition, open to all Argentine creatives, proposing their own artistic interpretations of the Branca world, from the historical logo to the bottles, from the historical campaigns to the symbols of communication.

Since last July, at the production facilities in Via Resegone 2 in Milan, within the fascinating spaces of the museum, the Fratelli Branca Distillery has been hosting two events, some of the most important in terms of culture in the city of Milan: the "Milanesiana " and "Letteralmente" festivals.

During the Milanesiana, which hosted a series of meetings, concerts and events related to theatre, music, literature and cinema, Fratelli Branca presented the latest book by the famous singer and writer Francesco De Gregori "LA VANITÀ E LA BELLEZZA DELLA MUSICA", written in collaboration with Antonio Anioli.

Instead, on March 21, in the rooms of the historic headquarters of Branca offices in Via Broletto 35, the company participated in the 4th edition of the "Letteralmente Festival", whose main concept this year is based on the theme "Information is Democracy ". Founded in 2014 by the writer Moreno Gentili, the festival is dedicated to the values of civil culture and offers a rich program of meetings and encounters in the main cultural sites of Milan. For this edition, Branca hosted the live concert of Marco Massa, Milanese singer/songwriter defined by journalist Vincenzo Mollica as "One of the best writers on the scene".
