Vineyards on the slopes of Hawequa

French in South Africa

The du Toit family has been involved in viticulture for over 300 years. Originally Huguenot expatriates from France, they planted the first vines in 1691 in what was then a wild and unpopulated region near present-day Wellington. Stephan du Toit has been running the winery since 1996, maintaining his family's tradition, which was temporarily interrupted by his father, a diplomat, due to his profession.

Barriques at Mont du Toit

On the slope of the mountain

26 hectares of vineyards are now located at the foot of Mount Hawequa. The cellar of the estate is carved into the slope, where the oak barrels are located. The wine from mont du Toit is aged here for up to 20 months. Already the first vintage wine under the direction of Stephan and the German winemakers Bernd Philippi and Berhard Breuer was awarded by the English "Wine" magazine in 2000.
