Nico Espenschied - modern, natural, authentic

Nico Espenschied is the scion of a Rhine-Hessian winegrowing dynasty that has been cultivating wine since the 17th century. His family runs the Espenhof a winery with attached hotel and restaurant. Meanwhile, Nicolas (his full name) is also the boss of the wine estate, mother Heike and father Wilfried have taken on the senior boss role. So, the basics of viticulture were laid in his cradle, however, it was a long way through Burgundy, Sonoma Valley in the USA or Burgenland, which gave his skills the finishing touch. In the process, he saw many things that were completely contrary to academic opinion, but which also produced very good results. This natural authenticity is important to Nico Espenschied, and so he lets "nature have the last word". He is supported in his undertakings by his wife Laura.

Thus, the artisan characteristics of the  Espenschied wines include a long resting time of the grapes in the juice, very little to no pressing, spontaneous fermentation in large wood and long resting time on the yeast. No fining agents are added to the wine and it is often not filtered. 

The origin of Nico Espenschied wines

The wines of Nico Espenschied come from Rheinhessen, the largest wine-growing region in Germany. When it comes to viticulture, the region belongs to the cold climate regions. The vintages of the wines of the Nico Espenschied brand come from the vineyards of the Espenhof estate, which extend over various sites:

• Flonheimer Binger Berg
• Flonheimer Ghost Mountain
• Uffhofener La Roche

The range of different grape varieties is very large, so you can find wines from the Scheurebe, from Riesling, Pinot Gris, Red Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Green Veltliner, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and several others.

Into the future with Espenschied

The unique and individual wines of Nico Espenschied are representative of the new beginnings in Rheinhessen and the constant progress in the wine landscape. Nico Espenschied does not stop setting impulses in viticulture. For instance, he cooperated with Fritz Kalkbrenner, a successful DJ, to create a total work of art out of wine and music. Furthermore, he joined the family winery to the "Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen", an association of different Rhine-Hessian wineries and the VPD.Rheinhessen, in order to strengthen the quality of Rhine-Hessian wine and to sharpen its profile.
