The New Zealand winery Sileni Estates in Hawkes Bay

Inspired by ancient Greek mythology

The Silenes were constant companions of Dionysus, the god of wine, vineyards and theater. As soon as a celebration was due, the Silenes were on hand to indulge in delicious food, good wine and pleasure.

This inspiration gave the winery the name Sileni Estates in 1998.

Recognition all along the line

The Sileni can also be found as a symbol  in the logo, represented as a triangle. The three angles of the triangle stand for

  • good food
  • good wine and
  • good company

The enclosing circle symbolizes the global orientation of the company and everything Sileni stands for.

The New Zealand wine regions

Sileni Estates is located in the sub-region of the Bridge Pa Triangle in sunny Hawke's Bay. With great pride and respect for the region, Sileni vinifies wines that reflect the full potential of the stunning terroir.

Silenis Pinot Noir Vines in Hawkes Bay

Hawke's Bay

On the hotter, sea-level plains, Merlot, Syrah and Semillon are vinified. On the cooler, higher foothills and coastal resorts, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc grapes feel most at home.

Marlborough

World famous for Sauvignon Blanc, this wine region cannot be missing in the portfolio of Sileni Estates. From its own vineyards and in collaboration with local producers, Sauvignon Blanc is grown in Marlborough

The art of winemaking

Every day, Sileni Estates ' winemakers face the  challenge of maintaining the purity of the grapes - while ensuring high quality to create memorable wines. This is at the heart of Sileni's business. It is the only way to bring light, elegant wines to the glass that perfectly match selected dishes.

Here's to good food, good wine and unforgettable evenings in good company.

Things to know about Sileni Estates
What does the name “Sileni” actually mean and what philosophy is behind it?
The name comes from Greek mythology. The Sileni were companions of Dionysus, the god of wine. They celebrated the good life, wine, and convivial dining. The winery has adopted this as its motto: creating wines that bring people together over good food and interesting conversations – in keeping with the guiding principle “The Joy of Living”.
Why does Sileni rely on two extremely different sites in Hawke’s Bay?
To cover a wide variety of wine styles, Sileni makes use of the climatic contrasts of the region. The “Cooler Climate” sites are located at higher altitudes or closer to the sea; they are ideal for crisp Sauvignon Blanc and elegant Pinot Noir. The “Warmer Climate” sites lie on the gravelly plains inland, where heat is retained, which is perfect for powerful Merlot and Syrah.
What makes Sileni’s “Nano” series so special for modern consumers?
With the Nano series, Sileni is responding to the trend toward mobility and mindful enjoyment. It is wine in a 187ml unit in which the glass (made from recyclable plastic) is directly integrated as the closure (“all-in-one”). This makes the wine the ideal companion for picnics, events, or travel, without needing a corkscrew or extra glasses.
How is the winery committed to sustainability?
Sileni is a founding member of the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) initiative. This means they adhere to the strictest standards in water management, energy efficiency, and soil conservation. On their website, they emphasize that sustainability is not a trend, but the foundation for the longevity of their vineyards, in order to safeguard quality for future generations.
