The winery Tenuta Il Poggione was founded at the end of the 19th century.
The winery Tenuta Il Poggione - A continued vision
Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner from Florence, was intrigued by the tales of a shepherd who was driving his sheep in the Montalcino area, and decided to visit the region. He fell in love with the landscape and the people, so he decided to buy land and start a farm. The estate was one of the first to commercialize Brunello di Montalcino in the early years of the 20th century, and one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino.

Quality is born in the vineyard at Tenuta Il Poggione
After more than a century, his heirs still refer to the vision and work of Lavinio Franceschi. Today, Leopoldo and Livia run the winery and continue to develop it with the same unchanging passion. In doing so, traditional knowledge is taken into account, oenological traditions are continued and the most innovative and modern techniques of today are used in the process. The careful care of the vineyards is the core philosophy of the winery: the secret of great red wines lies precisely in the attentive work in the vineyard.

Manual work in the vineyard and in the cellar
The Tenuta Il Poggione winery extends over about 530 hectares. 140 hectares are vineyards, 50 hectares are olive groves and the rest is used for agricultural purposes, for example as forest and as pasture for the animals. In the spirit of sustainable management, the estate has always cultivated different crops side by side, as well as keeping the use of agents to support the health of the plants to an absolute minimum. Some time ago, the winery was equipped with solar panels on the roof. The work is almost exclusively manual, both in the vineyards and in the cellar. By thinning out the bunches on the vines, the health of grapes and the nutrient needs of the soil are constantly monitored, so that even in difficult years a good product can be produced.
These are the grape varieties grown at Il Poggione:
- Sangiovese
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
