History of Vignamaggio
Vignamaggio's 15th century cellar vaults were the start of a long journey that began more than 6 centuries ago. Today, Vignamaggio is an organic farm with a state-of-the-art cellar, producing fine wines that reflect the characteristics of the estate's various terroirs. The first record of wine production at Vignamaggio dates back to 1404, when, on an original document, Amidio Gherardini, then co-owner with his brother Accerito, referred to plans for the use of some empty barrels they owned. And he also reads out a contract for an agreed quantity of wine to be sent to the thirsty recipient of the letter.

Vignamaggio Vineyards
The Vignamaggio vineyards cover an area of more than 70 hectares, all cultivated according to the principles of organic farming. Particular attention has also been paid to the recovery of some local varieties such as Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo.
However, their main varieties on the estate are:
- Sangiovese
- Merlot
- Cabernet Franc
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Malvasia Bianca
- Trebbiano
Vignamaggio Cellar
In the cellar of Vignamaggio the wine-making process takes place, from the selection of the grapes to the refinement of the wine in barriques and large oak barrels. During the harvest, the grapes are already selected on the terrace, which is located right above the cellar and serves as its roof. From here, the grapes are transferred to steel tanks below, where the fermentation process begins.

Vignamaggio Wines
The wines of Vignamaggio are produced as an expression of the essence of this territory. The goal of Vignamaggio's winemakers and cellar masters is to find the consistency, color, balance, fragrances and history of these hills in a single sip.

Vignamaggio is not just wine, however:
Vignamaggio Grain
The cultivation of cereals in Vignamaggio has ancient origins. Wheat, barley, spelt and oats were grown on the harder, more fertile soil at the bottom of the valley, but over the centuries were either abandoned or replaced by vineyards.
Vignamaggio Cinta Senese
On the plains of Montagliari, you'll often find piglets lazing and scampering through the woods and pastures. The Cinta Senese pigs bred on the estate have 11 hectares of woodland at their disposal. They bathe in the ponds to cool off in the heat, sleep in the soft straw of their enclosure or run through the forest in search of acorns.

Vignamaggio Olive Oil
The sunny slopes of Vignamaggio are covered with over 7000 centuries-old olive trees. When the first autumn mist rolls in, the branches of these small silver-leaved trees are laden with juicy green fruit. The olives are picked by hand and pressed within a few hours, preserving the freshness and special quality of the oil.

Vegetable and fruit orchards
Vignamaggio's organic orchards are located in various locations in the Piano di Montagliari floodplain, a quiet and unspoiled area along the Greve River. Plum, apple, apricot, pear and pomegranate orchards alternate with grain fields. In the coolest part of the farm, adjacent to the forest and river, we have our berry orchard with blackberries, raspberries and currants.
