Keth Winery - with organic wine for the future

The Keth Winery is located in Offstein in southern Rheinhessen, on the border with the Palatinate. Accordingly, the estate's vineyards also extend into both regions, giving the winemakers many options of terroir and grape variety pairings. The Keth family has been active in viticulture for 5 generations, and the estate is currently managed by Matthias Keth, who is assisted by his wife Silke. The family specializes in organic farming and the use of modern, fungus-resistant grape varieties in order to make viticulture possible for many generations to come.

Terroir of the Keth Winery

The vineyards of the estate are mainly located around four villages:

• around Offstein and the neighboring village of Heppenheim
• in the area of Westhofen
• around the village of Eimsheim
• around the two villages Oppenheim and Dienheim

Thus, the winery has different terroirs at its disposal: on the one hand loess soils with a limestone layer and clay overlay, on the other hand a limestone base with clay overlay or also loess soils with a gravel-sand layer resting on top.

5 grape varieties are cultivated by the winery:

• Pinot Blanc
• Sauvignon Blanc
• Pinot Gris
• Riesling
• Pinot Noir

Sauvignon Blanc in particular was a specialty in Rheinhessen until a while ago. Matthias Keth made his first steps as a winemaker on the first vineyard of the estate that was planted with this grape variety. The vineyard with this grape variety had to be approved as an experiment, today they are very happy to have grown this grape variety.

The wines of the Keth winery

The wines of the estate are basically divided into three classes:

• B - the basic wines
• K - the classics
• G - the great wines

The basic wines are the attractive entry-level wines of the estate. The K wines form the middle class of the estate, these wines are also often served in gastronomy. The best wines, as you can already guess, are in the G class. Here, great site wines are produced, especially the wines of the top sites Westhofenener Morstein and Heppenheimer Engelsberg. The Keth winery regularly receives awards for wines from these sites.

Depending on the wine, different vinification methods are used, starting with stainless steel for fermentation and also the aging of sparkling, mostly white wines. But also a classic barrel cellar with barriques is available to the estate to develop the great red wines and bring out the best of them.
