Helmut Wilderer, a German restaurateur, decided to leave the industry and founded Wilderer Distillery - South Africa's first private grappa distillery - in January 1995. Today, Wilderer is one of the most renowned producers of grappa, eaux de vie and gin in the world. It all started in January 1994 after he won a golf tournament and took a trip to South Africa. He arrived in Johannesburg and made his way to the golfer's paradise - Sun City.
