Amoreira da Torre - An Insider Tip from the Alentejo Region
Still a real insider tip. In the past, wine was produced in the Alentejo region mainly for the domestic and rather undemanding market. But in the meantime, things have changed for the better, not least due to the often-criticized EU subsidies. A structurally weak and technically backward region was able to move forward here. Many wineries now produce sophisticated wines from the classic, great Portuguese family of grape varieties, whose prices are still pleasantly low at the moment in view of their quality.
The History of Amoreira da Torre
Amoreira da Torre has also modernized. The grandparents were already producing wine here, but the grandchildren’s generation has modernized the estate with a great deal of innovation without losing sight of nature. Since 1997, the entire estate has been gradually converted to organic methods. Since 2008, the estate has been fully organically certified.
The Alentejo Region
The province of Alentejo is located south of Lisbon and, with 20,000 hectares of vineyards, is not only Portugal’s largest wine-growing region, but also the region with the largest area of cork oak forests. The extremely hot climate in summer allows the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness and, with well-adapted, autochthonous varieties, produces very distinctive wines. The soils here are strongly characterized by clay, granite, and loam.
