Angostura Rum is one of the largest producers of rum. Located in Trinidad and Tobago, the company is also famous for its aromatic bitters, whose recipe has remained unchanged since its introduction in 1824. Angostura has already won many awards for its spirits; its selection has been recognized by the Rum Masters as the most frequently awarded. In addition, Angostura has long been a purveyor of bitters to the British royal household.

The iconic bitters bottles

The origins of Angostura Rum

The history of Angostura begins with Dr. Johann Siegert, a military doctor in the army of Simon Bolivar. In 1824 he developed a bitter for medicinal treatment of the soldiers, which he named after his place of residence, Angostura (today Ciudad Bolivar). In 1975 his sons Carlos, Alfredo and Luis moved to Trinidad and re-established the company in Port of Spain. This also marked the beginning of international trade in Angostura spirits. The success paid off when, around the turn of the century, they were appointed purveyors to the Prussian and Spanish royal households. In 1912, Angostura was then chosen for the first time by the English monarch.

From gut feeling to sound expertise

As early as around 1900, the Siegerts had experimented with rum, but the business got its real boost when Robert Siegert, a trained chemist, brought his knowledge into the company in 1936. Further experts were hired, enabling the production of high-quality rum. Queen Elizabeth II confirmed Angostura’s status as a purveyor to the royal household, and shortly thereafter the Swedish royal family also commissioned the Siegerts. In 1971 Angostura became the largest exporter in Trinidad that is not active in the oil industry.

Enjoyment in the glass

The success continues to this day, so that Angostura is now represented in 170 countries. In 2017, Genevieve Jodhan became the first woman in the company’s history to take over as CEO.

One name – many products

In addition to the classic bitters, Angostura has greatly expanded its portfolio today. The spirits produced include:

  • Bitters
  • Rum
  • Brandy
  • Liqueurs
  • Vodka

Not all of these are marketed directly under the Angostura name, but for example under Fernandes, Royal Oak or Forres Park.
