*** Auchentoshan can be found by the whisky traveler in Dalmuir in the West Dunbartonshire district of western Scotland. The distillery was built around 1800 by John Bulloch under the name Duntocher Distillery. After his bankruptcy, son Archibald took over Auchentoshan in 1822, but also had to declare bankruptcy 4 years later.
In the 1820s, today's Auchentoshan distillery finally emerged from the bankruptcy estate, although even today there is no consensus on whether the Auchentoshan distillery actually emerged from the former Duntoch Distillery.
In the 1960s, J & R Tennent took over the then Auchentoshan owner McLachlans to be taken over by Charingtons as early as 1964. in 1994 Auchentoshan was finally sold to Suntory. Today, Auchentoshan is one of the last working distilleries in the Central Lowlands.
The water for Auchentoshan whiskies comes from the Kilpatrick Hills. The malt used is only very slightly peated and gives the Auchentoshan whiskies, together with the for Scottish distilleries not at all usual triple distillation, a very special charm.
