Bodega Colomé - Wines from the Highest Vineyard in the World
The Bodega Colomé winery was founded in 1831 and is owned by the Swiss Hess family, which owns vineyards in the United States, South Africa and Argentina.
Bodega Colomé is not only considered the oldest winery in the country, but also has the highest vineyards in the world. At an altitude of 2300 to 3111m above sea level, grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Bonarda and Torrontes are grown. Located in the upper part of the Calchaqui Valley in the northern Argentine province of Salta, the rootstock vines, up to 150 years old, are exposed to a semi-arid desert-like climate with large day-night temperature differences. The sandy loam soils have low nutrient content and are considered poorly fertile.
The vineyards are designed to be self-sufficient in this rather barren area. A purpose-built hydroelectric power plant supplies electricity to Bodega Colomé.
