Bodega Familia Irurtia

The Bodega Familia Irurtia has the family ownership already in the name. The winery on the Rio de la Plata was founded as early as 1913 by Basque immigrant Don Lorenzo Irurtia. In the 1950s, Dante Irurtia had a lasting influence on the family business and also on Uruguayan viticulture. Today, the winery is managed in 4th generations by 5 siblings, the sons and daughters of Dante Irurtia and Estela González and earns international recognition for your premium wines, which reflect the high art of viticulture in 4 generations.

Irurtia - certainly not a small winery

The winery today extends over 340 hectares, which already makes it one of the largest in the country. However, this does not change the family cordiality that one encounters when visiting this winery. At Irurtia, guided tours are also offered, during which one can of course taste one or the other noble wine. Afterwards, you can dangle your feet in the cool water on the jetty with access to the "Arroyo de las Vacas", a tributary of the Río de la Plata. From here the river flows only 10 kilometers to its mouth into the Río de la Plata.

Rio de la Plata - the influence of the Silver River

On the coast near the city of Carmelo the rivers Uruguay and Paraná meet. Here is also the "Km.0", the kilometer zero of the silver river Rio de la Plata. This river, which actually only describes the huge estuary where the sediment-rich waters of the sub-rivers mix, has a special climatic influence on the region and has a massive effect on the wines.
