When in 1404 the borders of the Serenissima, the Venetian Republic were redrawn, the Berici hills became the new frontier marker, thanks to the lovely landscape and the flourishing agriculture. A period began when the rich Venetians had splendid villas built here for their summer retreats, as wealthy landowners, rather than seafarers now  

in 1908 Casa Defrà was founded here, just opposite the famous Romeo and Juliet Castle. Today Casa Defrà is an association of winemakers from the region of the Berici hills, whose goal is to produce the best products with nacchaltity and to let the history of this region live on.
