Casa Gran del Siurana and the Mateu family

Casa Gran del Siurana is located in Empordà in Priorat, a wine-growing region in Catalonia. The winery is part of the Peralada Group, a diversified family business. The company goes back to the Barcelonian lawyer Damià Mateu i Bisa, who founded an automobile brand. With the profits, the family acquired Castillo Peralada, a 14th century castle with an attached winery. With the wines from this estate, they began to shake up the Spanish wine world.

The great house of the monks

The Cartuja (Charterhouse) of Scala Dei is the historic birthplace of vines and winemaking in the Denominación de Origen Calificada Priorat. In the 12th century, Carthusian monks from Provence brought with them the knowledge and techniques necessary to develop a viticulture that quickly caught on and that has evolved over the centuries. The Cartuja domains formed the basis of the historic Priorat, which today corresponds to the DOQ Priorat wine region. Some data about the area:

• 1.800 hectares of vineyards
• 600 winegrowers
• 102 wineries 

The terrain is such that the vines have to be planted on steep slopes, which often requires the construction of terraces.

The spirit of Casa Gran del Siurana

On the outskirts of Bellmunt del Priorat, on the banks of the River Siurana, stands the property popularly known as Casa Gran. This historic three hundred year old building was once the home of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei.

The land surrounding Casa Gran, where the monks took a strict vow of silence, is now part of our vineyards.

The Casa Gran del Siurana project began in 2000 with the aim of producing wines from scratch: Selecting the land with the greatest potential, choosing the most suitable vines and carefully caring for them until the optimal time of harvest, then deciding on the best means of vinification and aging.
