The history of the Coppo family and winery is closely intertwined with the history of the town of Canelli, which was already then the capital of Moscato.

The Coppo winery in Canelli/Piedmont

The company was founded under the banner of Moscato, when the founder Piero Coppo began producing sweet sparkling wines at the beginning of the 20th century. The step from sweet sparkling wine to dry sparkling wine from Pinot grapes was inevitable, as was engaging with the great red wines of Monferrato and the Langhe.

Strong family cohesion at Coppo

Piero’s successor was his son Luigi, who expanded the Coppo company and equipped it with structures and equipment that made it possible to face the markets in the difficult post-war period, and who left to his own sons, Piero, Gianni, Paolo and Roberto, in addition to the vineyards, that life and business philosophy which underlies the production of today’s wines. The enthusiasm of the four young men led them to take the direction that would prove so successful in the 1980s.

Coppo’s Pomorosso

In addition to other crus, the Coppo winery developed Pomorosso: Barbera aged in barrique, the symbol of Piedmontese pride. Once disparaged, it is finally gaining recognition today. The courage of the young generation, whose feet were firmly rooted in tradition, led them to deal with those grape varieties that were about to shape the taste of an international market, and thus Chardonnay and Cabernet came to Canelli as a challenge. A new cellar, high investments, restorations and environmental protection measures characterize the work of recent years.

One of the oldest family-owned wine estates in Italy

Today, the Coppo winery is considered one of the oldest family-owned wine estates in all of Italy and was even added to the National Register of Historic Companies in 2012. The wine-growing area of the Coppo family extends over 52 hectares, with the heart of viticulture located in Monferrato, in southern Piedmont.
