*** In 1839, Alexander Matheson was looking for the perfect location for his distillery, but his criteria for choosing the site were not those of the other distilleries in the region. Some had already decided to build their distilleries in the Speyside Valley. There was an existing infrastructure and a well-functioning transport connection, also the climate there was "friendlier" than in other corners of Scotland. Matheson, however, focused his attention on the quality of natural resources to make the best whiskey. So he settled on a remote spot on the shore of the Cromarty Firth, exposed to the harsh winds of the North Sea. On this "wild" spot of earth, he had everything built from scratch, from the railroad tracks to the rickhouse. Matheson went his own way, this is still reflected in the characker and taste de Dalmore.
