Disznókő stands for great wines from Tokaj, one of Europe’s most renowned wine regions, and embodies style, depth, and origin in every single glass. We distribute these wines for discerning wine lovers who value expression, maturity, and balance and who seek wines with history and character.

Disznókő Origin Tokaj

The Disznókő estate is located in northeastern Hungary in the historic Tokaj region, whose viticulture looks back on centuries of tradition. The site is part of a protected World Heritage area and offers ideal conditions for fine white and sweet wines with a clear structure. Warm days and cool nights ensure a slow ripening of the grapes and promote intense aromas as well as a precise acid structure. Fog from the nearby river valleys favors the development of noble rot, which is of central importance for the famous Tokaji Aszú wines.

Disznókő Site and Terroir

The vineyards of Disznókő form a contiguous single vineyard with gentle to steep slopes that are optimally oriented towards the sun. The soil is of volcanic origin and consists of tuff, clay, and stony inclusions that lend depth and tension to the vines. These soils store heat and release it evenly to the vines, leading to uniform ripening. The terroir shapes the wines with mineral freshness, clear fruit, and a fine salty note on the finish.

Disznókő Grape Varieties from Tokaj

Disznókő consistently focuses on traditional grape varieties that are perfectly adapted to the Tokaj terroir and authentically reflect the regional style. Yields are deliberately kept low to ensure concentration, depth, and aromatic clarity.

1. Furmint forms the backbone of Disznókő’s wines and provides structure, acidity, and longevity. The wines show aromas of apple, pear, and citrus, complemented by mineral nuances.

2. Hárslevelű complements Furmint with floral notes, fine spice, and a gentle honey nuance that lends additional elegance to the wine.

3. Zéta convinces with early ripening and a high susceptibility to noble rot, which makes it particularly valuable for concentrated sweet wines with a creamy texture.

4. Sárgamuskotály brings aromatic freshness, fine muscat notes, and lively fruit to the cuvées and provides an open, inviting bouquet.

Disznókő Viticulture and Selection

Vineyard work at Disznókő is carried out with great care and high craftsmanship. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand and in several passes to pick each grape at its optimal stage of ripeness. Especially for Aszú wines, individual berries affected by noble rot are selected, which have the highest concentration and aromatic intensity. This precise selection forms the basis for the exceptional quality of the wines.

Disznókő Wine Style and Character

The style of Disznókő’s wines combines tradition with modern clarity and places great emphasis on balance and elegance. Tokaji Aszú appears golden in the glass and unfolds complex aromas of apricot, honey, dried fruit, and fine spice. Despite its intense sweetness, the wine always remains fresh and lively, carried by a precise acid structure. The dry wines present themselves straightforward, mineral, and full of tension, and are excellently suited as food companions.

Things to know about Disznókő
Where does the unusual name “Disznókő” come from?
The name translates as “Pig Rock.” It refers to a striking, light-colored volcanic rock that sits at the top of the vineyard and whose shape is reminiscent of a wild boar’s head. Today, this rock is a landmark that visitors can see and that already gave the estate its name in the 18th century.
What makes the winery’s architecture so special?
Disznókő is known for its award-winning modern architecture, which forms a strong contrast to the region’s historic cellars. The press house, completed in 1995 and designed by architect Dezső Ekler, is constructed to use gravity (gravity-flow principle). The grapes are delivered at the top and the wine flows downwards without pumping, which preserves quality. The building is considered an icon of “organic architecture” in Hungary.
Why is Disznókő considered a pioneer of the “modern” Tokaj wine?
Before the political changes, Tokaj wines were often very dark, oxidative, and heavy. Disznókő was one of the first estates that, after 1992 (under the leadership of AXA Millésimes), introduced a fresher, lighter style. They focused on purity of fruit, vibrant acidity, and a golden color instead of deliberately aging the wine. This style now defines the standard for modern premium sweet wines worldwide.
What is the secret behind Disznókő’s “Eszencia”?
Eszencia is one of the most exclusive beverages in the world. It consists solely of the juice that drips out of the vats under the natural weight of the hand-selected Aszú berries (noble rot). Since the sugar content is extremely high (often over 500 g/liter), this liquid ferments very slowly over the course of years to about 1–3% alcohol. At Disznókő, this “nectar” is often stored in special glass balloons to preserve the absolute purity of its aromas.
