The history of a legendary winery
A true legend in the wine world is the Egon Müller Scharzhof winery, named after the Scharzhof vineyard.
The winery has been in the family since 1797. The Benedictine monk Johann Jakob Koch acquired the first lands/vineyards in 1801. He left the monastery and married. One of his daughters married Felix Müller in 1837. The son of the two, Egon Müller, finally took over the estate in 1880 with 8.3 hectares of vineyards. From then on, the success story of the Egon Müller family could not be stopped. For four generations, the winery has now been run by an Egon Müller, in the meantime by Egon Müller IV
After the end of the war in 1945, Egon Müller III led the winery into the future with his special quality standards. He bought a lot of vineyards, for example the single vineyards Wiltinger Kupp and Wiltinger Braune Kupp. In Germany, the Egon Müller wine estate is rather known to connoisseurs and insiders, but internationally it enjoys the highest reputation. At auctions, the noble sweet wines of Egon Müller often achieve record prices.

The Terroir
The climate on the Moselle and Saar is rather cool, which means that vintage and late harvest are particularly important. The soils consist of grey and red slate. These soils store the heat of the day and release it back into the vineyard at night. As a result, the wines benefit from a mild climate. In the white wine region Mosel, only Rieslings are planted at Egon Müller.

The Müller family's credo is: "The quality originates 100% in the vineyard". Therefore, the vineyards are cultivated close to nature. Artificial fertilizers and pesticides are completely avoided. The work in the vineyard is done manually. The partially unrooted vines - some of which were planted between 1880 and 1890 - also contribute to the wine quality. In the cellar, too, the work is minimally invasive. The result is intense and spicy, salty-mineral Riesling wines.
Auction wines
The world-renowned wines of Egon Müller Scharzhofberg are regularly auctioned off at high prices. Year after year they are sold at the auction GROSSER Ring of the VDP Mosel. The absolute world record holder is the 2003 Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese, which fetched 12,000 euros net.

The noble sweet wines of Egon Müller
Egon Müller has specialized in the production of noble sweet Rieslings. These are only produced in very small quantities, which - besides the quality, of course - justifies their high prices. The wines are extremely long-lived, can easily be kept for 20 years, but sometimes need a good 10-15 years to reach drinking maturity. At least this is the case with the Spätlese. So, it can be that an Auslese from the house of Egon Müller tastes perfect as late as after 25 years.
