The Gravel & Loam Story

Gravel & Loam was created by Andrew Bailey, an eccentric, tough Southerner who, just like his wine, has matured into a man who loves life, beautiful moments, and above all, viticulture. The summers he spent in Marlborough awakened his passion for the misty coves of the Marlborough Sounds. So much so that he calls this wonderful world home for himself and his winery.

Gravel & Loam Philosophy

It is often said that wine takes on the characteristics of the personalities that surround it. For Gravel & Loam, this is a truism that has allowed it to mature from a modest family business into the full-bodied, lovable winery it has become. Gravel & Loam vinifies this harmonious mystique into some very special vintages.
Gravel & Loam doesn’t get too caught up in “a faint hint of autumn leaves” and “delicate plum overtures” or even “crisp winter grasses.” They prefer to focus on producing good wines that are best shared for optimal enjoyment with a group of like-minded people.
Don’t worry, they do autumn leaves and plums as well. At Gravel & Loam, great importance is attached to letting the awards they win speak for their passion. That way, they can focus on producing top wines for every occasion.

MGravel & Loam Andrew Bailey

“My favorite aspect of wine is meeting up with friends, enjoying a glass, and having a bit of a laugh. Eating well together and sharing stories. That is what wine is about – it brings people together.” – Andrew Bailey (Founder, CEO)

Gravel & Loam Wines’ beautiful sites

The are an extensive, continuous area of sea inlets in the north of New Zealand’s South Island. This network of narrow sea channels formed over a long period of time through rising sea levels and the resulting flooding of river valleys.

Gravel & Loam Wines

No other region today is as well known for its Sauvignon Blanc as Marlborough. It is world-famous for it! But that doesn’t stop anyone at Gravel & LoAM Cove from letting other grape varieties grow in the hills as well. These varieties include, for example:

  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir
