Quite idyllic on the outskirts of the small village of Fournès in the middle of the oldest canton Remoulins lies the wine cooperative Les Côteaux de Fournès.

The journey  of Côteaux de Fournès

In 2018, Vignerons de Remoulins and Côteaux de F ournès joined forces to create the Les Vignerons de Remoulins Fournès cooperative. Since 1929, work has been carried out continuously in the vineyards, which today cover an area of over 350 hectares. All employees have an average age of 45 years or younger. This is something everyone at Côteaux de Fournès is very proud of, as, according to them, it brings momentum to the production of quality wines. The winegrowers' closeness to the earth and to what makes it tick is evident in the wines of Les Côteaux de Fournès.

Versatile soils- the site of Côteaux de Fournès

Fournès is known for its varied soils. The Rhône River left a rich heritage of clay soils, sediments and minerals here millions of years ago, giving the wine its strength. On the Villafranchia terrace, for example, the soil is made up of rolled pebbles that date back to the Quaternary period and the former bed of the Rhône. The wines produced here have a generous and spicy character. Wines with a lot of finesse and fruit are grown at Côteaux de Fournès on soils of white limestone slabs from the Tertiary period, and the round and full-bodied wines are made from grapes grown in the Marnes, where the soil has a high moisture content, making it better able to withstand periods of drought.

Wine Landscape

All the grape varieties grown at Côteaux de Fournès are typical of this region.

  • Grenache,
  • Syrah,
  • Carignan,
  • Marselan and
  • Mourvêdre

are used for the red and also the rosé wines,

  • Grenache blanc,
  • Viognier,
  • Clairettes,
  • Marsanne and
  • Roussanne for the white wines.

In addition to the many hours of sunshine, there is also a lot of wind from the northwest, the so-called Mistral. This ensures a quick drying of the grapes. The rounded pebbles from the ice age warm up quickly and store the heat very well. Probably also because of this, the cooperation knows almost no fungal diseases.

Wine barrels

Côtes Du Rhône- the home of Côteaux de Fournès

This cultivation area is considered as the oldest wine-growing area in France and lies south of Lyon between Vienne and Avignon in the picturesque Rhône valley. The ancient Romans discovered the potential of this region a good 2000 years ago, which is characterized by a landscape with different climatic conditions. Thus, the typical "Rhône wine" does not exist.
