Mar de Frades - "Sea of the Monks"

In Galicia, in the far west of Spain, lies the Rias Baixas wine region and the Bodegas Mar de Frades winery. The name of this bodega stands for "Sea of Brothers or Monks" and refers to its proximity to the spot on the coast where pilgrims used to disembark from ships to continue on to Santiago de Compostela. The area is characterized by high rainfall, proximity to the sea, a lot of wind and quite low temperatures by Spanish standards. The pergola system is used here, which ensures good ventilation and prevents diseases.

The oenologists of Bodegas Ramon Bilbao, in search of an outstanding terroir for high-quality white wines, found what they were looking for here. in 1987, under the guidance of chief oenologist Rodolfo Bastida, the bodega was renovated and is now a flagship of the region. finally, in 2007, a completely new winery was inaugurated.
