The winery is located in an exceptional region in a rugged yet generous corner of Catalonia. Merum Priorati is a well-known and one of the most important brands in the DOQ Priorat wine appellation. The winemakers know that a wine can only express typicality if it achieves excellence.

Cradle of long-lasting red wines- Merum Priorati

Perhaps Priorat is the cradle of the best, or at least the longest-lived Spanish red wines, and only on a relatively small total area of 1900 hectares. Yet, along with Rioja, it is THE most prestigious wine region in Spain, specifically in the Catalonia region. The wines from the Priorat DOQ come from a very special mountain area. The vines grow on very poor soils, clinging to slopes that demand hard work from the farmers. The vines have to endure freezing winters and hot summers with extreme temperature variations between day and night. One vine produces only about one kilo of grapes - but they are thick-skinned, sugary and small. The high tannin values are also outstanding.

Priorat- Home of Merum Priorati

Priorat is the Catalan name for the Priorato region. In this amazing wine-growing region, monks in the hinterland in the south of Catalonia were already growing grapes in the 12th century. But over the centuries, this region fell more and more into oblivion. In the end, cooperatives produced wine on only 600 hectares of vineyards. But thanks to René Barbier and Alvaro Palacio, the region gained new fame. Near the village of Porrera, right in the center of the Priorat, lies the Merum Priorati winery. On a total of 100 hectares, less than a quarter are currently cultivated. The soils consist of 400 million year old slate. On three vineyards

• Garnacha
• Cariñena
• Syrah and
•  Cabernet

are cultivated. The winery itself was planned and newly built according to environmentally friendly and sustainable criteria and equipped with the latest technology. However, the cellar work is still done traditionally. Thus, Merum Priorati can offer exclusive wines of the top class.
