The foundation of Monmoussau dates back to 1886.
A winery is born - in the caves of the Loire
Alcide Monmousseau, founded a wine shop in Montrichard. But he soon realised that the rock cellars in the Loire caves offered ideal conditions for vinifying wines according to the traditional method. The rock cellars were created by quarrying stones for the construction of the Loire castles. And so, over the years, a network of about 15 km of underground tunnels was created, whose temperature hardly deviates from 12°C in summer as well as in winter. Due to the optimal humidity, the ideal storage and ripening climate for the production of wines prevails here.

In the 1930s, his successor, Justin-Marcel Monmousseau, discovered a great similarity between the vineyards here in the Loire Valley and those in Champagne. He succeeded in making a Grand Vin using the aging characteristics of the rock cellars and the Dom Pérignon method (bottle fermentation, Méthode Traditionelle). His reputation soon preceded him across the borders and so the Cremants are still distributed worldwide today.
The Loire Valley
In the heart of the Valley of the Kings, in Montrichard, is the home of Monmousseau. The valley displays a wealth of architectural and historical heritage, whether entire towns or individual buildings, all trace the events, large and small, of French history. In this fascinating setting, Monmoussau offers tours of its extensive cellar system to further promote and enhance heritage in this magical and unusual place. This is because the exceptional landscape, with its green slopes, troglodytic houses and waterways, is a World Heritage Site.

Quality at the highest level
Carefully selected grapes form the basis for the still wines and cremants. Even over the centuries, the house has retained its corporate philosophy and continues to rely on traditional production methods and the most modern cellar technology. Thus one finds in the repertoire of Monmousseau
- Sparkling wines
- fine sparkling white wines
- finely sparkling rosé wines but also
- Still wines in white and rosé.
