*** Mortlach was founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alexander Gordon. The meaning of the name Mortlach is interpreted differently until today. Besides "big green hill" and "bowl-shaped valley", Mortlach is sometimes translated as "massacre of wild geese". However, "wild geese" refers to Danish soldiers defeated by Scottish King Malcolm II in 1010 in a battle near Dufftown.
Originally trading as Dufftown Distillery, Mortlach belonged to Glen Grant for a time and eventually to Diageo. Incidentally, one of the most famous master distillers who learned at Mortlach was the later founder of Glenfiddich, William Grant.
Mortlach draws its water from Speyside springs in the Conval Hills and produces some of its whiskey in a triple distillation process more common in Ireland.
