Why is the winery actually called “Oyster Bay”?

The name is a homage to Oyster Bay in Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. It is intended to reflect the close connection to the maritime environment and the freshness of the ocean, which can virtually be tasted in the cool-climate style of the wines.

What makes the Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc so special?

It is considered the wine that made New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc world-famous. At the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 1991, the very first vintage immediately won the gold medal and the trophy for the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. It is characterized by its explosive fruitiness (passion fruit, citrus) and razor-sharp freshness.

Can you visit the winery in New Zealand?

In contrast to many other wineries, Oyster Bay (Delegat) does not operate a public “cellar door” for spontaneous tastings or a restaurant. The company focuses entirely on viticulture and production in its state-of-the-art wineries in Marlborough and Hawke's Bay. In return, the wines can be found almost everywhere in well-stocked specialist wine shops and in the hospitality trade.

Does Oyster Bay only produce white wine?

Although the brand is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, it is also a specialist in cool-climate red wines. In the Hawke’s Bay region, excellent Merlot grapes grow on gravelly soils, while elegant Pinot Noirs are produced in Marlborough. Both grape varieties benefit from the long ripening period and thus retain their delicate fruit and natural elegance.
