Quinta do Portal wines

Whether the finest dry DOC Douro wines, premium Port wines or noble sweet Moscatel – the heart and soul of Quinta do Portal lies in producing quality wines of every kind.

Steep vineyards and 100 hectares of vines

The terraces wind around the vineyard of Quinta do Portal

The Quinta do Portal project, which began in the early 1990s, is based on a hundred-year-old estate where the Branco family has been producing Port since the late 19th century. Today, in addition to the vineyards surrounding the winery, the family also owns four further estates (Quinta dos Moros, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta da Abelheira and Quinta do Manuela). On steep terraces, mainly indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Gouveio and Viosinho grow here, but also international varieties à la Tinta Roriz, as Tempranillo is called in Portugal.

Through sustainable cultivation, the multitude of grape varieties, different altitudes, varying sun exposure and soils with different compositions, the Quinta do Portal winery has access to a huge selection of top-quality grapes. The fine wines and well-balanced Ports are the result of passion and commitment, recognized nationally and internationally.

Quinta do Portal Port wine

After the trio of grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca has been hand-picked and brought to the cellar in small quantities, all the experience of cellar master Paulo Coutinho for wine and Jeremy Bull for Port comes into play. Maceration is controlled both in lagares, large stainless steel fermentation tanks, and in closed barrels. The fortified wine then goes into used wine barrels for maturation over months and years. Whether 1 year for the Quinta dos Moros Vintage Port from Pinhão or the 40-year-old Tawny Port – full-bodied Ports from the Douro are no rarity at Quinta do Portal. The incomparable style from indigenous varieties combined with long ageing convinces over many years.

The origin of exquisite Ports: Quinta do Portal

Good to know about Quinta do Portal

  • In the book “Facts about Port and Madeira” by Henry Vizetelly, it is mentioned that the Quinta do Portal estate was not struck by the phylloxera disaster. In this, the winery stands alone.
  • The vineyard Quinta da Manuela, cultivated since 2009 and owned by the family since 2017, is classified with an “A” of the Região Demarcada do Douro. This makes the site one of the best in the Douro Valley.
  • The estate is credited with being the first in the Douro Valley to allow women to take part in the grape harvest. Henry Vizetelly describes the sight of the ladies dancing in ecstasy through the vines as undoubtedly amusing, but not exactly decent either.
