Fattoria San Michele a Torri - a historical Chianti
The Fattoria San Michele a Torri, which has been managed organically since 1993, is located in the heart of the Chianti area, about 15 km from the city of Florence, and covers 370 hectares of land, of which 55 hectares are managed as vineyards, 40 hectares as olive groves and the rest as farmland, woods and Cinta Senese cattle farms. The territory of Fattoria San Michele a Torri is located between the Chianti Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico wine regions, at an altitude of 211 meters above sea level.
Paolo Nocentini, the current owner of the farm, has given new impetus to the traditional agricultural activity, developing it further by expanding and renewing the cultivated areas and orienting them towards the organic production of the typical Tuscan products of the farm.

Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Classico and extra virgin olive oil have always been produced. In recent years, these traditional products have been joined by small productions such as Cinta Senese (cured meats), meat, eggs, vegetables, bread, legumes, honey, jams, flours, etc. The landscape of this particular region of Tuscany offers the visitor a series of unique landscapes characterized by vast vineyards, olive groves and rolling green hills.
The history of Fattoria San Michele a Torri
San Michele a Torri is a small village on the hills of Val di Pesa, southwest of the city of Florence.
The castle of Torri, a medieval defensive structure, gave its name to the town, which was first mentioned in 1126. Today only a few traces of the castle remain, which Castruccio Castracani had destroyed in 1324. The Fattoria San Michele a Torri was born from a medieval villa and has evolved over the centuries. The structure is already mentioned in documents dating back to 1535, and it is certain that in 1800 it was a production center of far-reaching importance.
The Fattoria was at the center of a fierce battle, the "Battle of San Michele a Torri", which took place on July 30, 1944. The hills on which the farm stands were the last bastion before the city of Florence. The New Zealanders and the German troops faced each other for a week, at the end of which several dozens of people were killed. Many historians claim that this battle had a higher intensity of fire than the famous Battle of Cassino.

During the battle, the entire population of San Michele a Torri fled to the cellar of the Fattoria. About 120 people took refuge in the barrels because they considered this place safer. In the New Zealand Armed Forces, July 30 is celebrated as "San Michele Day" in memory of the fallen. Recently, the farm has been renovated again, strictly maintaining its style and elegance.
