J.Hofstaetter Winery Tenuta

Winery Tenuta J. Hofstätter - Top Winery from South Tyrol

The winery Tenuta J. Hofstätter is one of the most renowned family wineries and a pioneer of single vineyard wines in South Tyrol. Founded in 1907 by Joseph Hofstätter in Tramin, it is now successfully run in the fourth generation by Martin Foradori Hofstätter. Approximately 50 hectares of its own vineyards in selected hillside and steep locations, one of the largest family-run wineries in South Tyrol and the only one with vineyards in the west and east of the South Tyrolean lowlands all the way to southern Trentino, at altitudes of 250 to 850 m, with different climate zones and soils - which is unique in the area - on both sides of the Adige River, provide optimal growing conditions for the various grape varieties.

Tenuta J.Hofstätter - Indigenous Grape Varieties and Terroir Wines Along the Etsch Valley

Mainly traditional, indigenous, and native grape varieties are cultivated: Gewürztraminer, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Noir, Vernatsch, Lagrein. Years of experience with these grape varieties, longstanding and careful viticulture, a commitment to gentle pruning from an early stage, and contemporary and gentle use of the best technology in the winery guarantee consistently high quality of the wines. Particularly for Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir, the winery J.Hofstätter has the largest areas in the region.

With its wines, J.Hofstätter enjoys a high reputation and is also internationally recognized as one of the most famous wineries in the region. In addition to the classical line from the typical South Tyrolean grape varieties, the winery J.Hofstätter vinifies the Selections line from selected grapes both as varietal wines and as white and red cuvées. The pinnacle of wine production is the single-vineyard wines from historical vineyards of the region.

Vigna and Riserva - J.Hofstätter as a Pioneer of Single Vineyard Wines

Hofstätter has become a pioneer of single vineyard wines in South Tyrol through its principle of single vineyards, which are comparable to "Cru" in showcasing their origin from "Vigna" classified parcels. Wines from these single vineyards are terroir wines with unique character. The soils, climatic conditions, and location in which the grapes grow contribute to a delightful tasting experience.

Location matters. These are verifiably historic sites that have been planted with suitable grape varieties very early, and the historical names of locations and estates are retained. The grapes, which are rigorously vinified separately, come from geographically precisely defined parcels. Since 1987, the winery has designated the Barthenau Vigna S.Urbano Pinot Noir and the Pinot Bianco Barthenau Vigna S.Michele as Vigna on the label. The Kolbenhof Gewürztraminer also belongs to this category. The yield of grapes from a parcel is limited, and thus also the quantity of wine. Three of these exceptional wines are only vinified in the best wine years.

Winery Tenuta J.Hofstätter - 5 Estates and a Wine Tower in Tramin

The winery J. Hofstätter owns several estates, including five historical manor houses, the typical estates of South Tyrol. The wines bear the names of the estates: Kolbenhof, Rechtenthaler Schlossleiten, Barthenau with Yngram, Steinraffler, Oberkerschbaum, and Maso Michei. With the acquisition of Maso Michei in southern Trentino, a remarkable elevation, the family returns to the roots of their ancestors.
The headquarters of the winery is located in the heart of Tramin, where Martin Foradori Hofstätter built the new wine cellar as a wine tower in 1997, right next to the church tower of the small town of Tramin, creating an interesting architectural contrast in the historical town center. In 2013, innovative concrete barrels were introduced to the wine cellar, a complete novelty in wine production for South Tyrol. Due to their special aesthetics, they have even become one of the attractions of the winery.
Here is also the wine bar, Enoteca, and restaurant of the J.Hofstätter family, a starting point for enjoyable moments and tours of the wine cellar and vineyards.
