Valle Sur Wine (1)

In the Chilean Valle Sur, wines have been produced since the Spanish colonial period. The climate conditions of the wine-growing region, unique to Chile, create a particularly dense aroma structure that you will taste right with the first sip.

The Valle Sur: Here, fruitiness is the focus

If you enjoy fruity and fresh wine, the noble drops from the Valle Sur in Chile offer exactly what you are looking for. The wine region is known primarily for its rich red wines, but if you are also in search of tasty dry white wines from the Valle Sur, you will find them at VINELLO.

Wine Region Valle Sur

The Valle Sur is by far the southernmost wine region in Chile. The climate is cool to moderately Mediterranean and predominantly rainy, while the wines impress with fruitiness and a dense aroma. The most significant wine variety of the region is the red Pais and the white Muscat d'Alexandrie.

Location and Structure of the Valle Sur Wine Region

The Valle Sur is the southernmost of the Chilean wine regions and translates to "Valley of the South" in German or "southern valley." In English-speaking regions, it is often simply referred to as "Southern Chile." The wine region extends over three river valleys and their surroundings, which together form the three subregions in Valle Sur:

  • Valle del Italia
  • Valle del Bio Bio
  • Valle del Malleco

The Valle del Italia

The Valle del Italia is the largest and northernmost of the three subregions. It is located in the Chilean region of Ñuble about 420 kilometers south of the capital Santiago de Chile. The extension is just under 100 kilometers in both north-south and east-west directions.

The central geographical feature essential for viticulture is the confluence of the Italia with the Ñuble and the Pacific, which forms the western border of the Valle del Italia. The climate is cool and rainy. The soil consists of alluvial soils made from sedimented sand and clay from the two rivers. One of the known wineries in the Valle del Italia is Miguel Torres Chile.

What grape varieties are grown in the Valle del Italia?

In the Valle del Italia, red varieties such as Pais and Carignan noir, and increasingly Cabernet Sauvignon have been cultivated for some time. The most significant white wine variety is Muscat d'Alexandrie from the Muscat family.

The Valle del Bio Bio

The Valle del Bio Bio is located in the Chilean region of the same name and is known for its fruity, fresh wines. Due to the relatively flat terrain, viticulture predominantly takes place at altitudes between 50 and 200 meters. With an annual rainfall of nearly 1,300 mm, the Valle del Bio Bio is one of the rainiest wine-growing areas in all of Chile. Thanks to the regular strong winds, humidity is not an issue for viticulture. Overall, a moderately Mediterranean climate prevails.

What grape varieties are grown in the Valle del Bio Bio?

The two dominant wine varieties in the Valle del Bio Bio are the white Muscat d'Alexandrie and the red Pais. Additionally, white varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the red variety Pinot Noir, are also grown.

The Valle del Malleco

The Valle del Malleco lies immediately south of the Valle Bio Bio and is thus the southernmost of the three subregions in Valle Sur. The temperatures are characterized by significant day-night differences, while the climate is overall cool and rainy. At the same time, the volcanic rock-dominated terroir ensures strong soil drainage, creating conditions suitable for wines with a concentrated aroma. The small town of Traiguén in the north of the Valle del Malleco is considered the center of viticulture.

What grape varieties are grown in the Valle del Malleco?

In the Valle del Malleco, primarily white Chardonnay and red Pinot Noir are grown.
