Family history in Italy - VignAmato

The VingAmato winery has a history full of authentic and joyful Italian artisan spirit, combined with an understanding of and attachment to the Castelli di Jesi region. In the late 1940s, Umberto Ceci laid the foundation for the winery with the purchase of a small vineyard called "Battinebbia" in S. Paolo di Jesi. The first Verdicchio grapes were included in the purchase, but it was not until Umberto's son Amato and his wife Maria took over the management of the vineyard that wine production also began on the estate. When Maurizio and his wife Serenella became the third generation to take over the winery in 1992, it was renamed VignAmato in honor of Amato. It is a word creation from the Italian word for vineyard "Vigna" and the name "Amato". Today the winery is in the hands of the fourth generation. The three siblings, Alessandra, Francesco and Andrea, have advanced the winery to a flagship operation. It has up-to-date cellar technology and the vineyards are undergoing conversion and will be certified organic by 2023. The restructuring was a conscious effort on Andrea's part, as he no longer wanted to accept the harmful effects of sprays on humans and the environment. With all the spirit of innovation and novelty, the family never forgot its roots and is strongly linked to the region.

Location of the vineyards at VignAmato

The vineyards in S. Paolo di Jesi, Montecarotto and Cupramontana are located on different slopes and terroirs. At an altitude of 220 to 500 meters above sea level, they specialize in the production of wines with protected designation of origin such as Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and PGI wines. The winery currently has 27 hectares of vines spread over eight different plots, each with unique characteristics that respect and highlight the terroir and the individual grape varieties.

VignAmato in the Marche

Marche is the only region in Italy with a plural name. They cover an area of about 10,000 square kilometers, stretching from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. It consists largely of rolling, parallel hills that slope down from the mountainous interior to the Adriatic coast. Located in the center of the Italian peninsula, Marche covers an area between the Apennines to the west of the region and the Adriatic Sea to the east. It borders five regions, namely Abruzzo, Lazio, Tuscany, Umbria and Emilia Romagna.

Verdicchio Vines in the mountains - VignAmato

Verdicchio has found its ideal geomorphological habitat thanks to the combination of clay and limestone soils in this region, which meet the air currents that rise from the sea to the nearby valleys and cannot be found anywhere else. Its excellent value for money has brought it success and growth, making it one of the most popular and consumed white wines by Italians. On the slopes of these charming, beautiful hills, one of the most interesting native grape varieties in Italy, Verdicchio, has been cultivated since Roman times. But other notable grapes have also found their permanent home here, these would be:

  • Lacrima
  • Montepulciano
  • Sangiovese
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
