Winery Villa Hochdörffer – Palatine Wine Tradition in the Hochdörffer Family
In the heart of the Southern Palatinate, surrounded by gentle hills and sun-drenched vineyards, lies the Winery Villa Hochdörffer. For generations, the Hochdörffer family has dedicated itself to viticulture, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern know-how. The wines from the estate reflect the diversity and terroir of the region and delight wine lovers far beyond the borders of Germany.
Family-Owned Winery with History
The roots of the winery delve deep into the history of the Palatinate. Today, it is run by Hans and his wife Lieselotte Hochdörffer. Since 2012, their son and winemaker David Hochdörffer has been responsible for the cellar and operations of the winery. His sister Anna is in charge of marketing and export. Together, this generation is well-prepared for the future.

Philosophy: Quality, Sustainability, and Respect for Nature
The Hochdörffer family places great importance on sustainable viticulture and a respectful approach to nature. The vines are carefully tended to in order to harvest healthy grapes of the highest quality. In the cellar, David Hochdörffer focuses on gentle processing, natural yeasts, and ample time to create characterful wines that authentically reflect the terroir of the Southern Palatinate.
The Growing Region: The Southern Palatinate – A Paradise for Wine Lovers
The Southern Palatinate is known for its mild climate, diverse soils, and long wine-growing tradition. The Winery Villa Hochdörffer cultivates nearly 50 hectares of vineyard area around the wine village of Nußdorf. These vineyards are spread across the towns of Nußdorf, Frankweiler, Godramstein, and Birkweiler.
Geographical Location and Climatic Conditions
The vineyards of the winery are situated on gentle slopes with optimal sunlight exposure. The climate is characterized by warm summers and mild winters, creating ideal conditions for viticulture. The proximity to the Palatinate Forest ensures sufficient rainfall and protects the vines from extreme weather conditions.
Soils and Terroir
The diversity of soils in the Southern Palatinate significantly contributes to the character of the wines. On the winery's vineyards, one can find, among others:
- Löess: These mineral-rich soils produce robust, full-bodied wines. The Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder varieties, as well as our Merlot, thrive exceptionally well on the Löess.
- Shell Limestone: Soils made of shell limestone can be somewhat challenging for the grapevines. Because the soil is quite stony, the vines have to "work hard" to access nutrients. This leads to the development of a very strong root system, ultimately producing particularly characterful wines. Shell limestone also serves as a good heat storage, as it can rapidly absorb the warmth of sunlight and releases it only slowly.

Vineyard Sites of Winery Villa Hochdörffer
The winery cultivates several renowned single vineyards, each offering unique conditions for cultivating various grape varieties:
- Nußdorfer Kaiserberg: This site is located south of Nußdorf on a southwards sloping hill. Here, on the fertile marl-limestone-Löess soils, the varietal wines of Weißer Burgunder and Spätburgunder grow.
- Birkweiler Kastanienbusch: One of the most famous single vineyards in the Southern Palatinate with a specific microclimate. The Riesling vineyard at the foot of the chestnut bush lies about 150 meters above sea level on distinctly Palatine sandstone soils.
- Godramsteiner Münzberg: This site stretches over a gently south-facing hill. Here, the Chardonnay vines encounter a challenging substrate on the stony shell limestone soils, pushing them to achieve their best.
- Frankweiler Biengarten: This site is at the foot of the Palatinate Forest on a south-facing slope. The shell limestone soils can absorb and store the warmth of the midday sun well, making this location very warm despite the coolness of the nearby forest. Ideal for sun-kissed Syrah grapes.
Diversity of Grape Varieties at Winery Villa Hochdörffer
The winery focuses on a wide range of grape varieties to produce diverse and characterful wines:
- Riesling
- Grauburgunder
- Weißburgunder
- Chardonnay
- Spätburgunder
- Syrah
- Merlot
Especially the Burgundian grape varieties are in the spotlight of the winery and are vinified in various styles.

Winemaking: Craftsmanship and Modern Technology in Harmony
In the cellar, the winery relies on a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The grapes are processed gently to preserve their natural aromas. Depending on the grape variety and desired wine style, the aging occurs in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels. Special attention is paid to slow fermentation and sufficient aging time to create complex and harmonious wines.
Stylistics of the Wines
The wines of the winery are characterized by their freshness, elegance, and expressive strength. They authentically reflect the terroir of the Palatinate and impress with their complexity – from invigorating white wines to powerful red wines with aging potential.
