Viña Montgras

Viña MontGras is a Chilean winery located in the Colchagua Valley. The estate is owned and managed by brothers Hernán and Eduardo Gras.

Viña Montgras -  the dream of the brothers Gras

in 1993, the Gras brothers foundedViñaMontGras together with Cristián Hartwig. The Gras family is originally from Catalonia and has been constantly active as entrepreneurs since immigrating to Chile at the turn of the century. While Eduardo was first drawn to the real estate business, Hernán was quick to take up the tradition of the wine trade, which the family had even been involved in back in his native Spain.

He studied viticulture and enology at the Catholic University of Chile and then traveled to France and the United States to hone his knowledge. After 20 years with Canada's largest wine company, he returned to Chile to launch MontGras with his brother.

Today, the company's managing director is Adolfo Hurtado, who is supported by a dedicated team.

Terroir of the vineyards of Viña Montgras

Today, the Viña Montgras estate owns vineyards in the regions of:

• Leyda
• Maipo
• Colchagua

Amaral in the Leyda Valley

Just 12 km from the sea, this vineyard is strongly influenced by the maritime environment. This creates a semi-arid climate, with cool air from the Humboldt Current and balancing winds from the Maipo Valley. Located 150 meters above sea level, the vines grow on 650 hectares.

The grape varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. The climatic conditions allow the grapes to ripen rather slowly, and the soils of marine limestone deposits and granite additionally leave their mark.

Intriga in the Maipo River Valley

This vineyard was founded as early as 1865. it covers 180 hectares, with grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soil is characterized by alluvial sediments from the Andes, washed up by the Maipo River over thousands of years.

Low yields allow the grapes here to become highly concentrated, so the best wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, come from this vineyard.

The headquarters in the Colchagua Valley

MontGras ' vineyards in the Colchagua Valley are distributed among three wineries, San José, Ninquén and Pumangue.

San José was the first vineyard planted after MontGras was founded. Accordingly, a wide variety of grape varieties, both red and white, can be found here.

Ninquén stands out, located on a mountain at 300 meters above sea level, which is a remnant of a mountain range on the coast. The soils are of volcanic origin. Only red varieties are grown, which, due to the poor soil, produce lower but higher quality yields. The temperatures are also more balanced than in the rest of the region, so top wines can be produced here.

Pumanque, founded in 2007, is the youngest of the three and offers climates similar to the Mediterraneum and also benefits from maritime influences.
