Winery Thomas Hensel Bad Dürkheim

Thomas Hensel was born into viticulture, as the Hensels have owned the best vineyards around Bad Dürkheim for over 300 years. In the picturesque village, the Hensel winery is located right next to a sports airfield. With the lines Aufwind, Höhenflug and Ikarus, Hensel takes the exposed location next to the glider and sports airfield with a wink, because a glider is also emblazoned on the logo.

Hensel's wines are not only found in top gastronomy, but wine lovers also appreciate the creations from time-tested and trendy grape varieties. For each vine Hensel has selected the appropriate site, because only with the right terroir can excellent wines be created. In doing so, Hensel relies on tranquility and care.

"Hensel is a phenomenon, young, cool and creative!"  Stuart Pigott

Thomas Hensel cellar wine tanks

In the vineyard, Thomas Hensel from Bad Dürkheim lovingly tends his vines, because only from healthy plants can the best grapes be harvested. After selective harvesting, the grapes are carefully transported to the cellar building, where they are gently crushed and pressed. After fermentation, the wines are left on the lees for a long time to stabilize. Filtering is hardly ever done, but is usually not necessary thanks to the light pressing.

Hensel - Palatinate grape variety at its best

Useless pumping around of the wine is also avoided at the Thomas Hensel Winery, because the wine should mature without stress until it is drawn into the bottle. Quality characteristics of the Hensel winery are the drastic reduction of the harvest quantity and an extra portion of manual labor.

Crops grown at Hensel include:

  • Riesling
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Muscat
  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Pinot Gris
  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Blanc

Quality does not have to be priceless. Even the wines in the liter qualities bring a lot of joy into the glass and with the flight of fancy Merlot Thomas Hensel proves that also the old Bordelaiser grape variety feels more than well in the sunny Palatinate.

Things to know about Weingut Hensel
