Joachim Flick Winery Tradition in Viticulture since 1650
“AS QUALITY CAN ONLY ARISE IN THE VINEYARD, SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION IS THE MEASURE OF ALL THINGS.”
Joachim Flick

Not far from the Frankfurt banking metropolis, in Wicker in the Rheingau, lies the Joachim Flick winery in the house of the Straßenmühle, which has existed for over 700 years. The Flick family is a winemaking family and has been cultivating wine for over 370 years. The 20 hectares of vineyards, mostly planted with Riesling, stretch from Wicker via Hochheim to Lorch. They are located in the Mainz Basin, a prehistoric sea whose sediments create the calcareous soil. This gives the wines a unique minerality and longevity.
Over the centuries, a state-owned winery emerged. It was built by Count Eppstein in the 14th century and was first mentioned in a document at that time as a result of a donation. From the 16th century until secularization, the Counts of Hesse were the owners of the estate. That is why two lions still adorn the gate of the winery today. For them, the lion is a symbol of courage and strength – and serves as a symbol for their wines.

Two particularly historic vineyards are the Wickerer Nonnberg and the Viktoriaberg.

The Nonnberg – a living history and magnificent wines of the present
In a deed dated 13.01.1281, the monasteries of Retters in the Taunus and the nunnery of Tiefenthal in the Rheingau exchanged properties. A nuns’ (wine) hill in Wicker is mentioned there for the first time. In 1791, the Nuns’ Vineyard, with a size of 5 Morgen in a prime site, was named and valued by the local court at 3,500 guilders. The nuns’ property, as they were in financial difficulties at the time, passed into the ownership of the cathedral chapter in Mainz.
The Victoriaberg – the royal hill
In 1845, Queen Victoria visited Hochheim together with her husband, Prince Albert, and was taken by the city fathers for a wine tasting in the “most beautiful and best vineyard” of the district. Georg Michael Papstmann, who owned the vineyard at the time, was granted the favor in 1850 by the English court to name this vineyard “Queen Victoriaberg.” To this day, the Victoriaberg Riesling is enjoyed on many occasions by the English royal family. The most recent occasion was the visit to Germany by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William and his wife Kate.
