Schmitges Winery - the best from the Moselle for almost 300 years

The Schmitges Winery is located in the Mosel Valley, a wine-growing region rich in tradition. The vineyards here extend over the steep slopes of the area, where the Moselle grape variety par excellence thrives: Riesling. The Schmitges family has been growing the white grape variety here since 1744. The winery is fully committed to quality viticulture with low yields, gentle processing and aging to bring out the best in the famous Moselle wine.

The Schmitges family

The Schmitges family vineyards, as mentioned above, are located on steep slopes along the Moselle River. It is not possible to work by machine on vineyards like these. So it all goes back to careful, manual work, aided at most by lifts that snake along between the vines. However, it is precisely this comparatively slow method of work that results in significantly higher quality of the harvest material and control of the vines. In addition to Riesling, other grape varieties are grown in the vineyards:

  • Rivaner
  • Pinot Gris
  • Pinot Blanc
  • Pinot Noir

The Moselle Valley and its Rieslings are characterized by the slate terroir, which gives them their special aroma. Coupled with the vineyards, which allow long sunny days due to their steepness and orientation, perfect conditions for the grapevine are offered here. The Schmitges winery can draw on two special sites for the best of its wines:

Erdener Treppchen

The Erdener Treppchen is located on the Middle Mosel and is one of the most famous sites in the area. The slopes have a gradient of 10 up to  65%. The soil consists of weathered gray slate, the orientation is south-southwest. The vines are mostly grafted, but occasionally you can find plots with rootless vines. The wines from this site are elegant and have a good minerality. Mainly dry and fruity-sweet Spät- and Auslesen are produced from this site.

The situation Erden prelate

Erdener Prälat

The Erdener Prälat is the top vineyard of the winery. The slope here goes from 50 - 75%, the vineyard is perfectly oriented to the south. The soil here consists of gray and red clay slate. The vines are between 50 and 100 years old and all are true to their roots. The winery uses this vineyard to realize long ripening on the vine, the harvest usually takes place only in November. The wines from this site are very dense and mineral, strictly limited Grosse Gewächse or Auslesen/Beerenauslesen are produced from these grapes.

The wines from the Schmitges Winery

Even if the two sites mentioned only indicate the "high" portfolio, the entry begins with the inexpensive estate wine, to local wines, until you finally arrive in the "upper levels" at the site wines. The program also includes sparkling wines from Riesling and Pinot Noir, and for friends of the spirit, the winery also produces pomace and pear brandy.
