The Gœttweig Monastery, steeped in history, was founded around 1083 by St. Altmann, then Bishop of Passau. In 1094 it was bequeathed to the Benedictines, whose economic focus was already forestry and viticulture.
The baroque monastery complex, which was destroyed after a major fire in 1718 and was subsequently redesigned and rebuilt by the architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, is located on the eastern edge of the Danube valley of the Wachau, opposite the town of Krems.
At an altitude of 449 meters above sea level, an enormous variety of wines are grown in individual plots of the Ried Gottscheller, Ried Silberbichl and Ried Pfaffenberg sites, which benefit greatly from the geological differences here: from gravelly-sandy soils to loess and loam to primary rock weathering, the soils have very diverse characteristics and give the wines grown a very special character.
The microclimatic conditions here on the south bank of the Danube are also very varied. From the area of the Dunkelsteinerwald, cool air blows towards the Gœttweig vineyards, thus ventilating them. In general, the Danube region has a natural humidity and rather warming Pannonian air masses. Particularly in the single vineyard Ried Pfaffenberg, which is oriented south to southeast near the Danube, the cultivated vines are exposed to strong winds and temperature fluctuations. However, the winemaker of the Stift Gœttweig winery, Fritz Miesbauer, knows how to deal perfectly with the varying soil and climatic conditions of his sites and, with the support of his team, consistently conjures up outstanding wines that reflect the character of the region.
