Wohlmuth - top wines from southern Styria
The Wohlmuth winery, located at the foot of the Kitzeck mountains in Styria, has been run as a family business for 200 years now. The current management of the company is held by Gerhard Wohlmuth and Gerhard Wohlmuth junior.
As one of the southernmost wine-growing regions in Austria, viticulture here is influenced on the one hand by the warm climate of the Mediterranean, and on the other by cool winds from the nearby Alps. There are strong temperature fluctuations between day and night. This very special Illyrian climate is complemented by the steep slope orientation of the Wohlmuth family's vineyards as well as the considerable altitude of up to 600m above sea level. All these factors contribute to the distinctive, unmistakable character of Wohlmuth wines.
The vines in the individual sites, which include the Hochberg and the Rabenkropf in Mittelburgenland, thrive on Paleozoic slate. This primary rock helps the red wines of the Wohlmuth winery to minerality and a very complex fruit expression. The red wines are aged exclusively in wooden barrels, which rounds off the taste and quality of the products produced here.
