Bodegas Campillo - a château in the Basque Country
Bodegas Campillo is a winery in the Basque Country, which belongs to the Faustino Group. The estate is located in the middle of the Rioja Alavesa wine region in the south of the Basque Country. The first thing that stands out is the architecture of the winery, which is supposed to embody the style of a French château in the Spanish wine-growing region. The founder of the Faustino Group, Julio Faustino Martínez, was a great friend of architecture and wine, two passions that he combined here.

The vineyards of Bodegas Campillo
50 hectares of vines surround the winery today, located near the medieval town of Laguardia. Rioja Alavesa has mainly quite poor soils, so here vines tend to be planted with a lot of spacing, in order not to heat up too much the fight for the few nutrients between the plants. Different grape varieties are grown here to make Campillo's portfolio possible. Included are the Spanish national varieties, but also international representatives, such as:
- Tempranillo
- Garnacha
- Viura
- Chardonnay

While Tempranillo serves as the basis for the various red wines that make up the bulk of the portfolio, Garnacha is used to make a rosé wine, while Viura and Chardonnay naturally produce a white wine. In the process, except for the rosé, the rest of the wine is aged in barrels.
Quality at Campillo
The red wines, typical of Rioja, are available in different levels of aging. Thus, typical predicates such as Crianza (at least 2 years of aging, 1 of which in barrel), Reserva (at least 3 years of aging, of which at least 1 year in barrel) and Gran Reserva (at least 3 years of aging, 2 of which in barrel) can be found on the labels of Bodegas Campillo, so depending on taste and demand, the appropriate wine can be found. Selected jewels of the house such as the 57 Gran Reserva raise the level even higher.

The wines of Bodegas Campillo are also happy to be guests at competitions and fairs and are regularly awarded there by authorities of the wine scene. Awards by Decanter, James Suckling, the Guía Penin or the Berlin Wine Trophy are the rule rather than the exception. The high quality of the wines of the Basque winery knows how to convince regularly.
