The vineyards of Bodegas Caro in Mendoza

An international match

The idea of a partnership

in 1999 there was an idea. Why shouldn't two winemakers join forces and jointly manage a bodega in Argentina. The idea quickly became a plan - Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Catena family join forces. The concrete plan: to combine the two nationalities of France and Argentina and the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, each typical of the country (and characteristic of winemakers), in a single wine.

The name - Bodegas Caro

As one might initially suspect, there must be a Caro(lin) in one of the winemaking families. However, this is not the case. The name of the Bodegas is composed of the first two letters of the respective families: CAtenaand ROthschild

The two winegrowing families

  • Catena
The Catena family has been involved in viticulture since the fourth generation and can draw on extensive knowledge of the terroir in Mendoza. Not to forget their passion for the Malbec grape variety.
  • Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)
The Rothschild family can draw on centuries of experience in the cultivation, vinification and development of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety. The blending of the two grape varieties also plays an important role in this partnership. Rothschild has passed on this knowledge to the Catena family

This is more than "just" the CARO

2000 was the year in which the CARO joint project was launched. Due to the shared passion for wine, the extremely friendly partnership and the joy of winemaking, another wine was vinified in 2003: AMANCAYA. So to speak the little brother of CARO. For the 10th anniversary in 2010, the grape variety Malbec, beloved of Argentina, was celebrated. Thus, the single-varietal ARUMA was launched.
