Bodegas Protos

The winery Protos is located in the castle of Peñafiel in the region of Castile, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero and was founded in 1927. 

Winery Protos - the chance has no chance

It consists of two wineries, which you can also visit. The older winery runs through the interior of the mountain, and the new large wine cellar was designed by architects Richard Rogers, Alonso Balaguer and Arquitectos Asociados. There is another winery in Rueda: La Seca (Valladolid), also owned by this winery. Here the successful white wines of Verdejo are produced. The name"Protos" means "first" and this is the position that the Spanish winery wants to live up to. Protos wines are known and highly appreciated all over the world for their excellent quality.

Variety of aromas through slow aging at Protos

The Tempranillo grape variety particularly benefits from the Mediterranean climate with continental influence on the plateau and low rainfall. Dry and hot summers with temperatures above 35°C and long cold winters with temperatures as low as minus 18°C and temperature fluctuations between day and night during the ripening period allow the grapes to ripen more slowly. This facilitates the storage of sugars in the berries as well as the concentration of polyphenols, tannins and color pigments. Many small vineyards, offering a wide variety of different soil types, contribute to excellent quality. Along the Duero River, some of the soil is calcareous, while the rest of the area is more clayey and sandy.

Ripeness measurement with the most modern technology

At the Protos winery, nothing is left to chance. Every step and every value is carefully monitored and documented. This also applies to the barrels of each supplier. Research, development and innovation to achieve the best quality is one of Protos' top priorities. With great effort, no less than 1,400 hectares of vineyards scattered throughout the Ribera del Duero region are regularly controlled and maintained. Modern infrared technology is used to determine the degree of ripeness of the grapes, while only 20-kilogram boxes are used during the harvest. Unsuitable grapes are sorted out before further processing to ensure excellent wine quality. Crianza red wines and Verdejo white wines are the flagships of Protos wines.
