Sheep, meadows and cold climate – Marlborough

Marlborough was just another sleepy rural area populated by large flocks of sheep until the 1970s. The climate was cold – but not too cold to vinify one of the first Sauvignon Blancs from Marlborough. And Brancott Estate took on this challenge. Over the years, the winemakers advanced the wine culture in Marlborough – even the Queen took notice and planted a vine that still produces well. To this day, this New Zealand winery continues to impress with its wines, above all with the grape varieties

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Chardonnay and
  • Pinot Noir

The first vines

The first vines were planted in 1973. But success failed to materialize – though the ambition of the Brancott winemakers grew. And so they started thinking in a new direction, quite literally. The vines were replanted and now enjoy sunny days and cold nights at their new location. Thanks to these special climatic conditions, the grapes develop a unique and above all fresh taste. That is why it is important to preserve this region. Brancott Estate is a founding member of the initiative for sustainable winegrowing, because they know how important it is to work in harmony with nature.

When Montana Wines became Brancott Estate

Winery

It all began with the name Montana Wines. But as international recognition continued to grow, the risk of confusion with the US market and wines from the state of Montana became too great. A new name for the winery was needed – and so the name was chosen after the Brancott cellar in Blenheim.

However, the name Montana Wines can still be found on New Zealand shelves today. Brand awareness in New Zealand is simply too high, and so labels bearing the name Montana Wines are still printed for the domestic market. So if you ever go on holiday in New Zealand and see Montana Wines – it is Brancott Estate, just as we know it.

Things to know about Brancott Estate
Why is Brancott Estate considered a pioneer of Marlborough winemaking?
In 1973, Brancott Estate laid the foundation for what is now the world-famous Marlborough wine region by planting the first commercial vines there. Contrary to the prevailing opinion at the time that New Zealand’s South Island was too cold for viticulture, the team (then under the name Montana) planted the first Sauvignon Blanc in 1975. The first release of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc followed in 1979, marking the beginning of a global phenomenon.
What is behind Brancott Estate’s “Letter Series”?
The Letter Series is an exclusive selection of wines that reflect the craftsmanship of the winemakers. Each wine in this series is named after a specific vineyard (e.g. “B” for the Brancott vineyard) and is produced in a distinctive style from grapes sourced from premium sites in Marlborough. The aim is to achieve the perfect harmony of aroma, structure and body, while highlighting the unique characteristics of each terroir.
Does Brancott Estate also offer wines with lower alcohol content?
Yes, with the Brancott Estate Flight series, the winery offers wines that are naturally lighter in alcohol and calories. This is achieved through special canopy management (leaf wall care) and an earlier harvest of the grapes. In this way, the wines retain their full, fruity flavor but have a lower alcohol content than the classic Brancott Estate range.
How is the winery committed to the environment?
Brancott Estate was a founding member of the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) initiative in 1997. The winery is actively committed to biodiversity, for example by protecting native falcons (karearea) and restoring wetlands. In addition, sustainable practices are used in the vineyard, such as the use of solar energy and energy-efficient designs in production, to ensure that the land is preserved for future generations.
