Château de Pez is located in the west of the commune of Saint-Estèphe and, together with Château Calon-Ségur, is one of the oldest estates in the region.

The Château de Pez

Old châteaux of the Médoc

The first mentions date back to the 15th century, winegrowing at Châteaude Pez began under the noble Pontac family about 100 years later. The Haut-Brion estate also goes back to this family. After the French Revolution and the accompanying expropriation, Châteaude Pez passed through many families until it was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1995.

The vineyards of Château de Pez

26 hectares of vineyards surround the Château de Pez, at an altitude of 12 to 18 metres above sea level. The soil has a layer of gravel about 1 metre thick, under which is the limestone and clay bedrock. The vines are trained according to the Double Guyot Médoc system, leaving two vines standing.

Grapes at full ripeness

To protect the vines from phylloxera, the vines are planted with the Riparia Gloire variety:

  • Merlot and
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Petit Verdot
  • Malbec

While the first two make up the majority, the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec are only grown in smaller quantities, as is typical of the region. The team at Château de Pez uses only hand harvesting.

The cellar of the Château de Pez

Château de Pez Wines - you can also leave them alone sometimes

As is typical for the region, Châteaude Pez  is "faithful to the wood" and works with barriques, 40% of which are renewed annually. Every three months, the wine is drawn off to separate it from the lees. This is also the only process to clarify the wine, Château de Pez does not undertake any further filtration of its wines. About 120,000 to 150,000 bottles are bottled each year. The wines of the estate Château de Pez belong to the highest quality of the Médoc and are wonderfully suitable to be stored for a longer time.
