The Château La Couronne is located in Saint-Emilion.

Vineyards around Saint-Émilion

Château La Couronne - classic from Saint-Émilion

Besides Cheval Noir, it is the second estate of the family and group of companies Mähler-Besse, which is located in this wine region. It has been part of the group since 1992 and has been equipped with new cellar technology.

Mähler-Besse is a wine merchant that has been active since the turn of the century. While initially the company only traded, in 1938 they acquired a stake in Château Palmer and later Cheval Noir. Since then, the Mähler-Besse family has also been active as a wine producer.

The Saint-Émilion wine region

The history of wine in Saint-Émilion dates back to Roman times. The grape variety

  • Merlot dominates the viticulture here
  • but also Cabernet Sauvignon and
  • Cabernet Franc

Climatically, the region can dominate due to its relative proximity to the sea, the cool sea air balances the hot inland climate to a certain extent.

Bordeaux wine at its best

The vineyard of Château La Couronne is located in the commune of Saint-Hippolyte, southeast of the town of Saint-Émilion. 9 hectares of vineyards there provide an annual yield of 60000 bottles. The soil of the vineyard is dominated by sand and clay, in contrast to the otherwise typical limestone soils of Saint-Émilion.

Vinification of the Château La Couronne

Limited yields, technically perfect craftsmanship and long maceration characterize the wine of Château La Couronne. It is aged at a controlled temperature in conical tanks. Maturation takes place in French oak for 12 months, 35% of the wood is renewed annually.
