Codice Citra

The Winery Codice Citra is one of the best-known cooperatives in Italy, the name Citra goes back to the historical designation of the region around the provincial town of Chieti in the north of Abruzzo.

The ultra-modern central winery processes the wines from 6,000 hectares of vineyards, spread across 11 local cooperatives with almost 3,000 members. Codice Citra was founded in 1973 and is considered today the most important wine producer in Abruzzo. 

Earth, sun and sea

The vineyards of Codice Citra cover 6,000 hectares. They are spread across the entire province of Chieti. Most of the vines grow near the Majella, the Gran Sasso and along the Adriatic coast. Citra can thus draw on a vast range of sites, characterized by wonderful terroir and a wide variety of microclimates. Thanks to the different winds and temperature fluctuations, the grapes develop very diverse aromatic characteristics. 

The indigenous grape varieties are:

• Merlot
• Montepulciano
• Trebbiano
• Pecorino
• Passerina
• Cocociola
• Montonico

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The region is particularly well known for the DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo; this zone extends through all four provinces of Abruzzo, but mainly in Chieti. Rosso and Cerasuolo are vinified from Montepulciano (85–100%), as well as other authorized red varieties.
Citra is not only a winery, but also a central advisory institution. Agricultural engineers and oenologists support the winegrowers in planting and cultivating the vineyards. Since oenologist Romeo Taraborelli was brought in as managing director, quality has once again been significantly improved. The Montepulciano wines are rather closed in their youth, but after a period of storage and maturation they gain appropriate richness and a beautiful harmony.
